Coopers Hill Cheese Rolling

Find More Cultural Events and Festivals In United Kingdom...

When:  May 31,  2011

Where:  Coopers Hill, Birdlip, Gloucestershire, United Kingdom

Every year, in the last Monday of May, a very extraordinary event takes place. The event that is held in the nature reserve Coopers Hill near Birdlip in Gloucestershire region (south west England), attracts thousands of local spectators as well as tourists. Due to the mass of expected guests it is recommended to book a room in advance. The competition preserved an ancient tradition that according to the experts' estimation goes as far as the Pre Roman times. Hundreds of youngsters gather on the top hill for a chase after a cheese rolling down the fill at 70 miles (112 km) per hour. According to the contest's rules, the wheel shaped cheese is rolling down the hill and the winner is the one who succeeds in catching it. See the enclosed film-strips which demonstrate the risk the competitors take. Not all the competitors succeed in reaching the bottom of the hill unharmed, part of them get injured. This is a very fascination unique event.

background and overview:

Great Britain, the dominant industrial and maritime power of the 19th century, played a leading role in developing parliamentary democracy and in advancing literature and science. At its zenith, the British Empire stretched over one-fourth of the earth's surface.
The first half of the 20th century saw the UK's strength seriously depleted in two World Wars. The second half witnessed the dismantling of the Empire and the UK rebuilding itself into a modern and prosperous European nation. As one of five permanent members of the UN Security Council, a founding member of NATO, and of the Commonwealth, the UK pursues a global approach to foreign policy; it currently is weighing the degree of its integration with continental Europe.
A member of the EU, it chose to remain outside the Economic and Monetary Union for the time being. Constitutional reform is also a significant issue in the UK. The Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales, and the Northern Ireland Assembly were established in 1999, but the latter is suspended due to wrangling over the peace process.
