When:  Jun 10,  2012

Where:  Castrillo de Murcia near Burgos, Spain

Once a year, since the 17th century, in May - June (celebrated the following Sunday to The Corpus Christi) an unique event takes place. The ''El Salto del Colacho'' [the devil's jump] which is held in Castrillo de Murcia a village near Burgos, is a mix of Spanish tradition and a religious ceremony. The festival is part of the Catholic holiday Corpus Christi (a Christian feast in honor of the Holy Eucharist) in Thursday after the first day of the Trinity (In the Christian calendar, Mandy Thursday - also called Holy Thursday). In the ceremony, the new born babies (up to 12 months) of the village are put on the ground while a person disguised as the Satan holding a club jumps above them as a remedy to the evil's removal from their souls. This event leaves the spectators, who are unfamiliar with the tradition, overwhelmed and speechless. It is recomended to make a room reservation in advance.

Spain - background and overview:

Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
