Where: Grand Place, Brussels, Belgium

In 1971 the Belgian landscape architect, E. Stautemans, created the first unique flower carpet in Belgium. He paved the Grand Place square in Brussels with thousands flowers that created a splendid carpet. Since then, biennially, in middle August the square which is surrounded by ancient buildings is covered with a giant flowers' carpet. Tens thousands of locals and tourists reach, during the four days of the exhibition, to watch the marvelous picture of the giant carpet which covers the whole great square. The carpet is made of more than 700,000 Begonia flowers in various colors. It is amazing. It is recommended to watch this breathtaking view from the heights of the town hall balcony (pay).

background and overview:
Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830; it was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.
