Once a year, in mid September, waiters from lot of Brussels' restaurants gather for a crazy contest: the Annual Waiter Race. At 4pm the competitors have to carry a bottle of Pineau des Charentes with three full glasses on a tray and run with it so that the drinks will not be spilled neither from the bottle nor from the glasses. The winner is the waiter who arrives first without spilling the drinks. The event is continued on the next Sunday and is accompanied by wine tasting, concerts of brass bands and various attractions for the whole family.

Belgium - background and overview:

Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830; it was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.
