Chiang Mai Yi Peng Lantern Festival - Thailand

Chiang Mai Yi Peng Lantern Festival continues ancient local tradition. It is the version of North Thailand to the famous Loi Krathong fiestas - "Loi" means float, "Krathong" is a raft.

According to the belief, the flying balloons take with it all the troubles and the daily difficulties of the person who fly it.

Various culture events take place in the festival; contests of flying balloons, parades of light and shadows, regatta contests, contests of floating lightened rafts (Krathong) made of banana leafs.

A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power.
