Chinatown New Year Parade & Festival  January 29th 2012

Sunday, January 29 from 11:30 a.m. - 4 pm, parade starts at Canal Street South.
 

Chinese New Year in New York is noisy and colorful as in China. This is a domestic holiday and its main principal is massive cleaning of the house. The purpose of the intensive cleaning is to purify evilness and assure good and fineness year for the home's inhabitants.

In addition to the family gathering, public celebrations are held. On the first day of the holiday, Chinatown, one of the biggest Chinese quarters in USA, has a festive atmosphere as in China.

New Year celebrations according to the ancient Chinese tradition, symbol the start of spring and the birth of the soil.

Thousands of people fill the street, as spectators or as participants, in a colorful parade.

Due to the numerous visitors during the festival days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.

The visitors can enjoy the dancers with multicolored costumes and giant dragons which march with the rhythm of cymbals and drums.

More than 200 restaurants, which represent most of the cooking's styles in China, offer the visitors the best its kitchens. It is certainly a vocal, visual and tasty experience.
