When:  Jul 6 , 2012 - Jul 14,  2012

Where:  Pamplona, Spain

The 6th of July is the holiday of Saint Firmin, the Patron of Pamplona. This day is the beginning of one of the amazing events in the world. Between the 6th and the 14th of July, for eight days, the residents of the city release big bulls to run free in the city's streets. The bulls, in groups of six big bulls and six small bulls, are freed from their bullpen and run amok in the narrow streets of the old city of Pamplona till they arrive to the Arena where the Corrida will take place in the evening. The local residents, wearing white cloths with red kerchief that is typical to the city cover their neck, run madly in front of the galloping bulls in order to avoid being bunted or being run over. In the evening they go to the Corrida, drink a lot of wine, sing and dance until losing their heads. Those who are interested in taking part in the race have to be in course before 7:30. Later, on exactly 8:00 the bulls are released to the street and the mad running starts.

Spain - background and overview:

Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
