Oct 29, 2010
- Oct 31, 2010
Where: Mana Island, Fiji
|
Magical Mana Island in Fiji's beautiful Mamanuca (mama-nu-tha) Group situated to the north west of Nadi International Airport provides the perfect Pacific setting for Ocean Swimming, warm clear waters, pristine reefs, colourful tropical fish and coral, all against a backdrop of blue ocean and the jagged peaks of distant islands. There are two swims on the main swim day of the Fiji Ocean Swim Festival - the feature event, a 3 km out-and-back course along the northern shore of Mana Island, and a 1.5 km event. There are overall and age group prizes for both events. On the Sunday, October 15, there will be the Fiji 10 km Ocean Swim, which will follow a course around Mana Island. This event is open to individuals and teams of 5 swimmers. Mana Island offers a variety of accommodation options, restaurants, bars, great beaches and a wide range of activities. Getting there is easy. Sun Air operates several flights daily from Nadi International Airport to the Island?s air strip. Sea Fiji run transfer services around the clock as necessary.

background and overview:
Fiji became independent in 1970, after nearly a century as a British colony. Democratic rule was interrupted by two military coups in 1987, caused by concern over a government perceived as dominated by the Indian community (descendants of contract laborers brought to the islands by the British in the 19th century). The coups and a 1990 constitution that cemented native Melanesian control of Fiji, led to heavy Indian emigration; the population loss resulted in economic difficulties, but ensured that Melanesians became the majority. A new constitution enacted in 1997 was more equitable. Free and peaceful elections in 1999 resulted in a government led by an Indo-Fijian, but a civilian-led coup in May 2000 ushered in a prolonged period of political turmoil. Parliamentary elections held in August 2001 provided Fiji with a democratically elected government led by Prime Minister Laisenia QARASE.
