Where:  From Noordwijk to Haarlem , Netherlands

One of spring symbols in Holland is definitely the Flower Parade – Bloemencorso, that starts in Noordwijk which is located in west Holland, and ends in Haarlem in north Holland. This colorful parade lasts for 12 hours.

On Friday, a day before the parade starts, all the floating stages, decorated with giant dolls made of flowers, are exhibited in the village center lightened up with colored lights. On Saturday, on 9:30 a.m. the parade starts.

A procession with about twenty floats and decorated cars with dolls made of colored flowers, jugglers, dancers and players hit the road. Thousands of spectators wait for the procession in all the places were it passes.

After 12 hours of slow ride, on 9 p.m., the multicolored procession enters the center of Haarlem. All the stages and the cars that participate in the parade are exhibited, like in the start point, until Sunday on 5 p.m. for the joy of the audience.

Updated details of the event are in Bloemencorso web site.

Netherlands - background and overview:

The Dutch United Provinces declared their independence from Spain in 1579; during the 17th century, they became a leading seafaring and commercial power, with settlements and colonies around the world. After a 20-year French occupation, a Kingdom of the Netherlands was formed in 1815. In 1830 Belgium seceded and formed a separate kingdom. The Netherlands remained neutral in World War I, but suffered invasion and occupation by Germany in World War II. A modern, industrialized nation, the Netherlands is also a large exporter of agricultural products. The country was a founding member of NATO and the EEC (now the EU), and participated in the introduction of the euro in 1999.
