Find More Cultural Events and Festivals In Jamaica...

When:  Feb 24,  2012 - Apr 15,  2012

Where:  Kingston & Negril & Montego Bay, Jamaica

Once a year, for more than 15 years, Jamaica holds an exiting carnival with motives similar to those of Trinidad but with local tastes. The Carnival kicks off on start February and ends on mid April. The carnival gets bigger and bigger every year and now days it turns into the biggest of the island's events.

The carnival's events last for two months attract more than 100,000 guests, locals and tourists.

Due to the numerous visitors during the carnival days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.

Most of the big events take place on Easter week. The main events are held in Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, in Negril and Montego Bay.

Carnival atmosphere is spread all over the island. Lot of bands play various music styles; Ragai, Calypso and Soca. A children parade takes place during the carnival's days but the climax is the colorful adult's parade which starts, on the last day of the carnival, in Beach Jouvert.

This parade can compete with Rio De Janeiro's parade. Nothing can be compare with attending Jamaica's carnival, enjoying the music, the dancing and the colorful traditional costumes. This is a genuine Caribbean fiesta.

The carnival's program and all information are present in the carnival's website.

Jamaica - background and overview:

The island - discovered by Christopher COLUMBUS in 1494 - was settled by the Spanish early in the 16th century. The native Taino Indians, who had inhabited Jamaica for centuries, were gradually exterminated, replaced by African slaves. England siezed the island in 1655 and a plantation economy - based on sugar, cocoa, and coffee - was established. The abolition of slavery in 1834 freed a quarter million slaves, many of which became small farmers. Jamaica gradually obtained increasing independence from Britain, and in 1958 it joined other British Caribbean colonies in forming the Federation of the West Indies. Jamaica gained full independence when it withdrew from the federation in 1962. Deteriorating economic conditions during the 1970s led to recurrent violence as rival gangs created by the major political parties evolved into powerful organized crime networks involved in international drug smuggling and money laundering. The cycle of violence, drugs, and poverty has served to impoverish large sectors of the populace. Nonetheless, many rural and resort areas remain relatively safe and contribute substantially to the economy.
