Every last Wednesday of August, for almost 60 years, the town Buñol holds its traditional tomatoes fight (La tomatina). A crowd of 40 thousands people gather in the town's square for the most peculiar fiesta in Europe. The tradition that began 60 years ago as the fiesta of the town's patron turned into an event where the participants throw 10 tons of ripe tomatoes on one another.
The event that last for two hours from 11am to 13pm begins in a water fight.
The celebrators splash water all around, water splashes also come from the houses' windows and terraces. On the second stage the T-SHIRTS fight begins where the participants throw their shirts on one another.
Now, they are ready for the real thing - the tomato fight. Tomatoes are thrown from the terraces on the people who are on the streets, and from the street back to the people on the terraces. During the 2 hours of the fight, huge tracks pour tons of tomatoes to the street.
The participants that get new ammunition energize the fight while more and more tracks spill tomatoes to the street. The street turns into a red tomatoes juice river. This is a unique event that can't be compared to nothing in the world.
Due to the numerous visitors during the festival days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.
The red color covers now everything in the street and becomes the dominant color of the whole environment.
The events of Buñol's are similar to those of the oranges throwing, ''Ivrea Carnival'', that is held in the winter in Ivrea Italy.
