Malta Freedom Day Regatta is a national holiday in Malta. It is celebrated, each year, on March 31st. The national ceremonies indicate the day when the British force and the navy left Malta on March 31st 1979.
In the main ceremony bouquets of flowers are placed in the memorial site in Floriana near the capital Valletta.
After the ceremony, in the afternoon, a colorful regatta takes place in Grand Harbor.

background and overview:
Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination.
