Once a year, in mid January, for more than thirty years (since 1974) Monte Carlo holds an International Circus Festival (Festival International du Cirque de Monte Carlo).
This old festival is known as one of the important circus events in Europe.
Circus artists such as acrobats, animal tamers and clowns, leading in their profession participate in the ten days festival.
The participants compete on various prizes; the prestigious ''Silver Clown Award'' and ''Gold Clown Award'' in various categories.
The prizes are bestowed in person by the royal family.
