When:  Apr 15,  2011

Where:  Valletta and all over the island, Malta

Our Lady of Sorrows Festival in Malta is an important Catholic holiday. According to tradition, the festival is celebrated, each year, on Friday before “Good Friday”. Religious processions take place in all the towns and villages over the island.

In some of the processions, ascetics march and drag heavy iron chains locked to their bare feet as a symbol to their sins’ atonement.

The ceremonies and parades are held all over the island. The most impressive events are held in Our Lady of Sorrows church in Valletta.

From this church depart the greatest and the most beautiful holiday parade of Malta.

background and overview:

Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination. Malta became an EU member in May 2004.
