Paris holds various sports’ events. In addition to the arrival of the Tour De France riders to the Arc de Triomphe, Marathon and Semi Marathon are held, every year, in the second half of September. Not least important is Classique Paris Versailles - La Grande.

This is a popular 16 km race that started on Eiffel Tower and ends on Palace of Versailles square.

Although ultimately a victor in World Wars I and II, France suffered extensive losses in its empire, wealth, manpower, and rank as a dominant nation-state.
