- Aug 12, 2012
Where: Killorglin - County Kerry, Ireland

Killorglin in Kerry County celebrates, once a year, for three days a unique street festival named Puck Fair. The festival is known as one of the longest and ancient events in Ireland which are held yearly in the same dates; from 10th to 12th of August. The central event, in the festival, is the coronation ceremony of the Puck king where the king is a he-goat. There are many and diverse explanations for the he-goat coronation and the Irish do not have one historic version. One of the explanations is connected to the Pre Christian period when in the Pagan ceremonies the celebrators thanked the he-goat or the Puck who is similar to the shepherds' god ''Pan''. More than 100,000 visitors (locals and tourists) attend the fair and create an international festive atmosphere. In addition to the coronation ceremony, a traditional horse fair is held, a colorful street parade, music shows in the open space, firework demonstration, juggler shows, dance shows, etc...

Ireland -
background and overview:
Celtic tribes arrived on the island between 600-150 B.C. Invasions by Norsemen that began in the late 8th century were finally ended when King Brian BORU defeated the Danes in 1014. English invasions began in the 12th century and set off more than seven centuries of Anglo-Irish struggle marked by fierce rebellions and harsh repressions. A failed 1916 Easter Monday Rebellion touched off several years of guerrilla warfare that in 1921 resulted in independence from the UK for 26 southern counties; six northern (Ulster) counties remained part of the UK. In 1948 Ireland withdrew from the British Commonwealth; it joined the European Community in 1973. Irish governments have sought the peaceful unification of Ireland and have cooperated with Britain against terrorist groups. A peace settlement for Northern Ireland, known as the Good Friday Agreement and approved in 1998, is being implemented with some difficulties. [Courtesy of The World Factbook]
