When:  Nov 24,  2010 - Dec 5 , 2010

Where:  River Kwai Bridge, 5 km north of Kanchanaburi, Thailand

Every year, from end November to start December, the River Kwai Bridge fiestas are held. The famous train bridge was built by the Japanese who used the Allies prisoners of war during WWII as compulsion employees.

The bridge is located 5 km from Kanchanaburi in North Thailand. During the week, folklore shows, travel in the old train, an historic and archeological exhibition are held.

The climax of the events is an audio-visulal performance which shows the legacy of the bridge events which occurred during the war.

background and overview:

A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.
