The Bull Carnival (Carnaval del Toro)

Find More Cultural Events and Festivals In Spain...

When:  Feb 17,  2012 - Feb 21,  2012

Where:  Ciudad Rodrigo, Spain

The little quite town Ciudad Rodrigo which is located in Salamanca region in west Spain, holds, once a year, a traditional bullfight.

The carnival is varied from the other traditional carnivals which take place prior to Easter, and is known as one of the ancient carnivals of its kind in Spain.

The carnival starts on the last Friday before Lent. Here, the same as in Pamplona, Ciudad residents free tens of angry bulls that chase the youngsters through the city streets up to the city square.

The city square is surrounded by fences and tribunes. In the carnival days the beautiful square turned into a bullfight arena that host amateur warriors.

Spain - background and overview:

Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
