Umbria Summer Jazz festival

Find More Cultural Events and Festivals In Italy...

When:  Annually in mid July (2011 -TBA)

Where:  Perugia, Italy

Every year, in July Perugia the capital of Umbria holds, since 1973, its known jazz festival. Since its start the festival turned into a quality jazz fiesta, one of the leading festivals in Europe. Lot of locals and mass of tourists fill the city (it is recommended to make a room reservation in advance) with the desire to enjoy a unique musical event. The Umbria jazz festival lasts for ten days. The marvelous play of the magnificent jazz players completes the unique atmosphere that soaks the city during the festival's days. In addition to the closed halls, it is possible to listen to concerts at the city square (parts of the concerts are held in open air places). All these creates a wonderful summer atmosphere with the jazz music which can be heard all over the ancient buildings and streets of the city.
This is a genuine fiesta for everyone. Don't miss it.

background and overview:

Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.
