Viareggio Carnival

Find More Cultural Events and Festivals In Italy...

When:  Annually. Was held in 2010 Jan 31 to Feb 21 (2011 TBC),

Where:  Viareggio, Italy

Once a year, in January - February (various dates), Viareggio celebrates its traditional carnival which preserves a tradition that starts in 1873. The over 130 year's carnival started as a mockery of the elected people of the city. The young residents of the city presented them in a shape of giant ridiculous dolls. Since then, the city's residents preserve the tradition and turned it into a giant fiesta of dancing and color, a symbol of peace, unity and love. Giant dolls which represent different figures from fairy tails as well as local and foreign politicians from all over the world, march in an amazing parade. Some of the dolls height is over 20 meters height. The carnival that entertains, every year, more than 800,000 guests offers a great variety of activities to the whole family and to children in particularly. In addition to the parade, masks' fiestas, theater shows and musical comedies take place. The restaurants offer special carnival's menus. Among the most impressive experiences of the carnival is the magnificent fireworks show. The carnival is a marvelous winter event that cannot be missed.

background and overview:

Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.
