When:  Oct 17,  2010 - Oct 31,  2010

Where:  Dresden, Germany

It's since 1995, that the Yiddish Music and Theater Week takes place in the German city of Dresden. The festival is dedicated to the language and culture of the the Jews of eastern Europe and is therefore unique in Germany. However, more and more the Jewish culture of today becomes an important part of the festivals, too. It all started in 1995 when enthusiasts from Rocktheater Dresden - a non professional theatre group with a special interest in music theater (not musical!)- started to rehears Itzik Mangers ''Di Megille'' in yiddish. The play was a great success and since they had got to know many people with an interest in Yiddish, Rocktheater founder Detlef Hutschenreuter initiated the first Yiddish Week in 1997 to bring all those people together. Highlights of the first year were the performances of Golda Tencer, famous actress of the Warsaw Jewish Theatre. Planned originally only for one year since 1998 the Yiddish week took place every year. In the festival there are all together more than 60 performances, films, concerts, lectures and guided tours etc.

background and overview:

As Europe's largest economy and second most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR). The democratic FRG embedded itself in key Western economic and security organizations, the EC, which became the EU, and NATO, while the Communist GDR was on the front line of the Soviet-led Warsaw Pact. The decline of the USSR and the end of the Cold War allowed for German unification in 1990. Since then, Germany has expended considerable funds to bring Eastern productivity and wages up to Western standards. In January 1999, Germany and 10 other EU countries introduced a common European exchange currency, the euro.
