The Barbados Crop Over festival is launched in start July and it ends with The Grand Kadooment on the first Monday in August.

The festival that marked the end of the sugar cane cutting season started in the 1780's, when Barbados was the one of the world's famous producers of sugar, and a festival was held at the culmination of each sugar season.

It stopped in the 1940's due to the decline of the Barbados sugar industry. The festival was revived to attract tourists to the island in the traditionally ''slow season''.

Now days it is a fiesta of music and masquerade, history and culture. The Calypso music is inextricably linked with the festival. The most activities are held in the last five weeks.

Activities like Calypso Tents, Ceremonial Delivery of the Last Canes, Cohobblopot, Kiddies Kadooment, Folk concerts and art and photographic exhibitions, Party Monarch, the Road March Monarch, the Pic-O-De-Crop Monarch, and Grand Kadooment.

Due to the numerous visitors during the festival days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.

Crop Over has become an event that attracts thousands of people from across the globe.

Barbados background and overview:
The island was uninhabited when first settled by the British in 1627. Slaves worked the sugar plantations established on the island until 1834 when slavery was abolished.
The economy remained heavily dependent on sugar, rum, and molasses production through most of the 20th century. The gradual introduction of social and political reforms in the 1940s and 1950s led to complete independence from the UK in 1966. In the 1990s, tourism and manufacturing surpassed the sugar industry in economic importance.
