Killorglin in Kerry County celebrates, once a year, for three days a unique street festival named Puck Fair. The festival is known as one of the longest and ancient events in Ireland which are held yearly in the same dates; from 10th to 12th of August.
The central event, in the festival, is the coronation ceremony of the Puck king where the king is a he-goat. There are many and diverse explanations for the he-goat coronation and the Irish do not have one historic version.
One of the explanations is connected to the Pre Christian period when in the Pagan ceremonies the celebrators thanked the he-goat or the Puck who is similar to the shepherds' god ''Pan''.
More than 100,000 visitors (locals and tourists) attend the fair and create an international festive atmosphere, it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.
In addition to the coronation ceremony, a traditional horse fair is held, a colorful street parade, music shows in the open space, firework demonstration, juggler shows, dance shows, etc...
The festival program, show time / schedule of events, getting to Puck, traffic and car parks etc, is present in the festival's link website below, under "Event Related Information" section.
