Antipodes Festival – A Celebration of Greek Culture

First held in 1987 in place of the earlier Greek Cultural Week, the Antipodes Festival has been run ever since by the Greek Community of Melbourne and has grown into one of the largest celebrations of Greek culture anywhere in the world outside Greece itself.

Held annually over a weekend in Melbourne’s historic Lonsdale Street Greek Precinct, the festival transforms the street into a lively, free-entry celebration packed with music, dance, food and community spirit that draws crowds from across the country.

Greek Culture Highlights:

• Live Performances: Local and international Greek artists take to multiple stages across the weekend, delivering dozens of hours of programmed entertainment.
• Traditional Dance: Dance troupes perform classic Greek routines, with group Zorba dances inviting visitors of all backgrounds to join in.
• Market Stalls: Dozens of pop-up stalls line the street selling handmade crafts, jewellery and Greek imports.
• Greek Cuisine: Souvlaki, gyros, loukoumades and other Greek staples are served up by food vendors throughout the precinct.

• Free Entry: The festival is free to attend, with food, drinks and market purchases paid for separately on the day.
• Best Time to Go: Arrive earlier in the day to browse the market stalls and grab food before the street fills up for the evening’s headline performances.
• Getting There: Lonsdale Street sits right in the Melbourne CBD, so public transport (tram or train into the city) is by far the easiest way in, since street closures are in place for the festival.
