Australian Masters Games
Launched in Tasmania back in 1987, the Australian Masters Games has grown over four decades into the country’s largest multi-sport festival for mature-age participants, having welcomed more than 135,000 competitors across its history as it travels to a different host region each edition.
Open to competitors aged 30 and over with no qualifying standards for most sports and no requirement to be an elite athlete, the biennial Games bring together thousands of participants across more than 40 sports, ranging from traditional track and field to social and niche disciplines, for a week of friendly competition and celebration.
Masters Games Highlights:
- Wide Sporting Program: More than 40 sports run concurrently, giving competitors of every interest and ability level something to enter.
- Opening Ceremony: A festive ceremony launches the Games, bringing together thousands of competitors from across Australia and overseas.
- Social Competition: With no elite qualifying standards required, the emphasis is firmly on participation, camaraderie and lifelong sport rather than pure performance.
- Host Region Showcase: Each edition doubles as a showcase for its host region, with events spread across local stadiums, ovals, courts and waterways.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Entry: Registration is required to compete, with separate entry fees per sport — spectating at most venues is generally free.
- Plan Your Sports: With events spread across many venues at once, competitors and travelling supporters should plan their week around a home base central to their sport’s venues.
- Getting There: Venues are typically spread across the host region rather than one site, so a hire car makes it much easier to get between competition venues on the same day.
- What to Wear: Pack for your specific sport plus comfortable everyday wear for moving between venues, and layers for cooler mornings and evenings in November.
- Accommodation: With thousands of competitors and supporters descending on the host region at once, booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore the Region: Between events, the host region’s beaches, wine country and coastal trails are well worth exploring — browse top local tours and activities here.
