Buenos Aires International Tango Festival & Championship

The Buenos Aires International Tango Festival & Championship, officially Tango BA Festival y Mundial, is the world’s biggest celebration of tango, held in the city where the dance was born. The city government launched the first Buenos Aires tango festival in 1998 with a huge open-air show on Avenida Corrientes. In 2003 it added the Mundial de Tango, the Tango World Championship, which now brings hundreds of competing couples from dozens of countries to Argentina’s capital each year.

The festival takes place each August, usually over about two weeks and often running into early September. More than 2,000 artists perform across some 50 venues spread through the barrios of Buenos Aires, from grand theaters and cultural centers to neighborhood milongas, and almost everything is free.

Tango Festival & World Championship Highlights:

  • Mundial de Tango Finals: The world’s top dancers compete in two categories. Tango de Pista is improvised social tango danced to music the couples haven’t heard in advance, and Tango Escenario is choreographed stage tango. The finals are held in a big downtown Buenos Aires theater.
  • Concerts by Tango Orchestras & Singers: Leading tango orchestras, bandoneón players, singers and contemporary Argentine artists play at prestigious venues such as the Usina del Arte, Centro Cultural Recoleta and Teatro San Martín.
  • Milongas & Dance Classes: Open-floor milongas and classes for beginners through advanced dancers let visitors join in rather than just watch.
  • Talks, Films & a Tango Fair: Lectures, film screenings, exhibitions, book launches, children’s activities and a market selling tango shoes, clothing and records complete the program.

Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:

  • Free Entry — Reserve Early: Nearly every festival event is free. Popular concerts and the championship finals require free tickets, which are typically released online a few days in advance and go within minutes. Other events are first come, first served, so arrive well before the start.
  • Getting Around the Venues: Events are spread across dozens of venues all over the city. Plan each day around one or two neighborhoods, and use the Subte (metro), buses or taxis to get between them.
  • Getting There: International flights land at Ezeiza International Airport, about 35 km from the city centre, while domestic and regional flights use Aeroparque Jorge Newbery near Palermo. Downtown is easy to reach by shuttle bus, taxi or ride-hailing app.
  • What to Wear: August is late winter in Buenos Aires, with cool days and chilly evenings, so bring warm layers and a jacket. If you plan to dance at the milongas, pack smart-casual clothes and shoes with smooth soles.
  • Accommodation: Neighborhoods such as San Telmo, Palermo, Recoleta and the city centre put you close to the main festival venues and the city’s classic milongas, and dancers from around the world fill up the favorite spots, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
  • Explore Buenos Aires: Between events, try a dinner tango show, walk the colorful streets of La Boca and Caminito, browse the Sunday San Telmo market or take a day trip to the Tigre Delta — browse top Buenos Aires tours and activities here.
