Burning of the Clocks

The residents of Brighton celebrate the Burning of the Clocks every year on December 21st. It is a colorful and happy community celebration that paints the city in a unique colorful night procession, moving from the city center to the beach.

The special community festival that first began in 1993 is now organized by Same Sky, the largest community arts charity in the south east of England. The event brings together city people of all ages who mark the shortest day of the year in a spectacular artistic winter carnival atmosphere.

The celebrants march holding in their hands lanterns and paper lanterns illuminated in the shapes of clocks that represent the passing of time. As expected, Burning of the Clocks attracts many visitors, majority of whom are out of town tourists. Admittedly, hotel rooms during this time are in high demand, surging lodging rates quickly. Therefore, it is is highly recommended to reserve hotel rooms early on to lock in current, more reasonable, rates.

The colorful procession culminates at the beach where a huge bonfire is lit in which masses of paper clocks are set on fire as a symbol of the end of the past year and the beginning of the new year.
