The port town Cadiz is located in south west Spain holds every year a colorful carnival that lasts for ten days. The carnival is known as the greatest in Spain. Cadiz 3,000 years old is the oldest known city in the Iberian Peninsula. It turns during the ten days of carnival festive to an urban colored center, the biggest in Spain. The carnival contains street shows, dance and singing, diverse gastronomic events, parades, humorous singing shows, dance parties with fancy clothes in open air, fireworks displays, etc…

As expected, Cadiz Carnival attracts many visitors, majority of whom are out of town tourists. Admittedly, hotel rooms during this time are in high demand, surging lodging rates quickly. Therefore, it is is highly recommended to reserve hotel rooms early on to lock in current, more reasonable, rates.

The most significant events in the carnival are two giant parades with the participation of the crowd:
The first parade is called Gran Cabalgata (Great Parade) takes place on the first Sunday of the carnival. It attracts more than ten thousands visitors.

The second Parade is Cabalgata del Humor (Comedy Parade). It is held on the last week of the carnival.

Visiting Cadiz during the carnival’s days promises an unforgettable culture experience !

Spain background and overview
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
