Canberra Balloon Spectacular

Launched in 1986, the Canberra Balloon Spectacular is one of the longest-running hot air balloon festivals in the world and one of only a handful of events of its scale globally, filling the capital’s dawn skies with colour each year.

Held annually each March, the free public event sees dozens of hot air balloons inflate and lift off at dawn from Patrick White Lawns, in front of Old Parliament House on the shores of Lake Burley Griffin, weather permitting.

Festival Highlights:

  • Dawn Mass Launch: More than 40 hot air balloons inflate and take to the sky together each morning, framed by Old Parliament House and Lake Burley Griffin.
  • Iconic Backdrop: The balloons drift across Canberra’s skyline past national landmarks, making it a signature photo opportunity for visitors and locals alike.
  • Free Public Event: Spectators can watch the entire launch from Patrick White Lawns at no cost, every morning the event runs.
  • Take to the Skies Yourself: Licensed operators offer passenger balloon flights over Canberra for visitors wanting to experience the spectacle from the air.

Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:

  • Free Entry: Watching the dawn launch from Patrick White Lawns is completely free — just show up early.
  • Best Viewing Spots: Beyond the launch site itself, Regatta Point, Black Mountain Peninsula, the National Arboretum, and Mount Ainslie all offer excellent alternative views of the balloons over the city.
  • Getting There: Old Parliament House is a short walk or drive from central Canberra; arrive early as the event starts at dawn and nearby parking fills up fast.
  • What to Wear: March mornings in Canberra can be cold, so dress warmly in layers for the pre-dawn start.
  • Accommodation: Canberra hotels can fill up during the festival’s run, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
  • Explore Canberra: With mornings free after the launch, it’s easy to spend the rest of the day exploring the capital’s museums and galleries — browse top Canberra tours and activities here.
