Chiang Mai Yi Peng Lantern Festival continues ancient local tradition. It is the version of North Thailand to the famous Loi Krathong fiestas – “Loi” means float, “Krathong” is a raft.

According to the belief, the flying balloons take with it all the troubles and the daily difficulties of the person who fly it. Thousands of people, local and tourists pour into town and the demand for accommodation is higher than usual, therefore it is advisable to check hotel prices and make reservations ahead of time.

Various culture events take place in the festival; contests of flying balloons, parades of light and shadows, regatta contests, contests of floating lightened rafts (Krathong) made of banana leafs.

Thailand background and overview
A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.
