Christmas Market (Weihnachtsmarkt) in Kassel
The Kasseler Märchenweihnachtsmarkt, Kassel’s fairy-tale Christmas market in Hesse, Germany, spreads across the city centre around Königsplatz, Friedrichsplatz and Florentiner Platz. Kassel is the city where the Brothers Grimm lived and collected their tales, and the market builds its whole look around them, with a new Grimm fairy-tale motto chosen every year.
Held each Advent from late November until the end of December, it is organised by Kassel Marketing and is free to enter. Stages, fairy-tale scenery and food stalls line the pedestrian streets of the downtown area.
Kassel Christmas Market Highlights:
- The Fairy-Tale Pyramid: A giant multi-storey Christmas pyramid on Königsplatz, billed as the world’s largest of its kind, is decorated with fairy-tale figures and turns above the main stage.
- Märchenwald & Grimm Village: A fairy-tale forest on Friedrichsplatz and a Grimm story village on Florentiner Platz bring the Brothers Grimm tales to life for families.
- Flying Santa & Stage Shows: Santa Claus glides over the square, and the main stage and Advent calendar stage host daily performances and story time for children.
- Ferris Wheel & Seasonal Food: Ride the Ferris wheel for a view over the lit-up market, then warm up with Glühwein, roasted almonds and Hessian specialities such as Ahle Wurst.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Free Entry: Walking around the market costs nothing. Rides and food are paid, and the market is closed over the main Christmas holidays.
- Best Time to Visit: Weekday afternoons are calmer. Come after dusk for the full effect of the lit pyramid and the Ferris wheel.
- Getting There: Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe is an ICE station on the main north–south line, with trams connecting it to the city centre. The market sites are all within walking distance of each other.
- What to Wear: Dress in warm layers and wear sturdy, waterproof shoes. The market is outdoors and winters in northern Hesse are cold and damp.
- Accommodation: Hotels fill up on Advent weekends, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore Kassel: Combine the market with the UNESCO-listed Bergpark Wilhelmshöhe and the Hercules monument, or the GRIMMWELT museum — browse top Kassel tours and activities here.
