City2Surf Sydney
Conceived by staff at The Sun newspaper and inspired by San Francisco’s Bay to Breakers, City2Surf held its first race in 1971 with just over 1,500 starters. It has since grown into one of the world’s largest fun runs, now drawing tens of thousands of entrants each year across every level from elite athletes to costumed fun-runners.
Held annually each August, the 14km course starts at Hyde Park in the Sydney CBD and winds through the eastern suburbs — Kings Cross, Rushcutters Bay, Double Bay, Rose Bay, Vaucluse, and Dover Heights — before finishing at Bondi Beach, tackling the notorious Heartbreak Hill climb along the way.
Event Highlights:
- Heartbreak Hill: The course’s defining challenge, a roughly two-kilometre climb along New South Head Road from Rose Bay to Vaucluse that hits runners right around the halfway mark.
- Staggered Start Groups: Runners are seeded into start groups by ability, from elite athletes at the front to costumed fun-runners further back, keeping the huge field moving smoothly.
- Bondi Beach Finish Festival: The finish line at Bondi Beach turns into a festival atmosphere, with food, entertainment, and thousands of finishers celebrating together by the sand.
- Costumes & Community Spirit: Many entrants run for charity or simply for fun in elaborate costumes, giving the event as much of a community-carnival feel as a serious race.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Entry: Registrations open online well ahead of race day and entry numbers are capped, so sign up early — your seeded start group is based on your entered or previous finish time.
- Course Strategy: Pace yourself before Heartbreak Hill around the halfway point, and take advantage of the mostly downhill final stretch into Bondi to make up time.
- Getting There: Public transport is the way to go — trains and buses serve both the Hyde Park start and the Bondi Beach finish, and road closures make driving impractical on the day.
- What to Wear: Light, breathable running gear suited to a Sydney winter morning, with layers to shed as the day warms up and the course gets going.
- Accommodation: Sydney fills up around race weekend, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended, ideally somewhere near the CBD or eastern suburbs for easy access to the start and finish.
- Explore Sydney: Make the most of the trip with the city’s other icons, from Harbour Bridge climbs to Sydney Harbour cruises — browse top Sydney tours and activities here.
