Cologne`s fifth season, world-famous as a colourful, joyous celebration, annually attracts around one million visitors into the city. The fife Crazy Days are the end and climax of Cologne Carnival.
The highlight of the carnival is Rose Monday (Rosenmontag), two days before Ash Wednesday

The time of merrymaking in the streets is officially declared open at Alter Markt on the Thursday before the beginning of Lent.

Due to the numerous visitors during the carnival days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.

Pubs stay open till the early hours of the morning, and the spirit of Carnival reigns in the streets and public squares, in offices and at home, and above all in places for dancing and drinkin

Germany background and overview
As Europe's largest economy and second most populous nation, Germany remains a key member of the continent's economic, political, and defense organizations. European power struggles immersed Germany in two devastating World Wars in the first half of the 20th century and left the country occupied by the victorious Allied powers of the US, UK, France, and the Soviet Union in 1945. With the advent of the Cold War, two German states were formed in 1949: the western Federal Republic of Germany (FRG) and the eastern German Democratic Republic (GDR).
