Corpus Christi, the Catholic holiday in honor of the ”holy beard”, is celebrated on Thursday after Trinity Sunday. All over Tenerife, it is celebrated in folklore music and parades. The most beautiful fiesta can be seen in La Orotava.

On the holiday, the city streets and squares are closed to traffic. Instead, it is covered with colorful carpets made of various kinds of flowers mixed with colored sand that was brought from the near hills.

Due to the numerous visitors during the festival day and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance. The most beautiful carpet is exhibited, every year, in Plaza del Ayuntamiento. Such marvelous decoration can’t be seen anywhere else.

After a religious parade that pass over the carpets, a great fiesta of music and traditional dances takes place, when the city residents wear traditional cloths. In addition, a traditional parade is held with local bands playing music using musical instruments typical to the Canaries Islands.

This unique event attracts, every year, thousands of spectators locals and tourists (it is recommended to make a room reservation in advance), that enjoy the extraordinary experience of music and color.

For accommodations, check the most recommended hotels in La Orotava and around, most of them suggest FREE CANCELLATION option or NO PREPAYMENT NEEDED – PAY AT THE PROPERTY:

Spain background and overview
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
