Cygnet Folk Festival
Cygnet Folk Festival has run since 1982, making it one of the longest-standing fixtures on Tasmania’s arts calendar. Organised entirely by the not-for-profit Huon Folk Inc, with a volunteer committee, a small paid festival team and a small army of dedicated volunteers, it has grown from a local gathering into one of the state’s most-loved cultural events without ever losing its community roots.
Held annually on the second weekend of January, the festival takes over the small village of Cygnet in its entirety, with pubs, halls, cafes, churches, parks and streets around Port Cygnet in the Huon Valley all pressed into service as venues. For three days the whole town becomes a stage, blending big-name concerts with intimate sessions on porches and in backyards.
Festival Highlights:
- Concerts & Showcases: A packed concert program spans multiple venues across the village, featuring folk, world and roots artists from Tasmania and beyond.
- Workshops & Masterclasses: Hands-on music, song and dance workshops and masterclasses run throughout the weekend for musicians of every level.
- Children’s & Youth Program: A dedicated children’s program and youth awards give younger festival-goers and emerging performers their own place on the bill.
- Arts, Crafts & Food Market: Stalls selling local arts, crafts and gourmet Huon Valley produce fill the streets between performances.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Tickets: Weekend passes cover most of the program, with some premium concerts ticketed separately, so it’s worth booking through the official festival site ahead of time as popular sessions sell out.
- Venue Layout: With venues scattered across the whole village, the festival is best explored on foot — a printed or app-based program helps with planning a route between overlapping shows.
- Getting There: Cygnet sits in the Huon Valley south of Hobart, reachable by car via the Channel Highway, with festival shuttle buses typically running from Hobart during the event.
- What to Wear: January in the Huon Valley is generally mild but can turn cool and showery with little warning, so layers and a light rain jacket are worth packing alongside summer clothing.
- Accommodation: On-site camping and glamping are popular options, while Cygnet’s own accommodation is limited, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore Tasmania: Combine the trip with the wider Huon Valley and southern Tasmania — browse top Tasmania tours and activities here.
