Elektronik Zoo
Elektronik Zoo is a boutique open-air techno festival in Kortenaken, Belgium, set in a leafy garden in the village of Hoeleden in the green Hageland region of Flemish Brabant. It was founded in 2023 by veteran Belgian techno DJ and producer Marco Bailey, who curates every line-up himself. Despite its intimate size, it has quickly become a favorite on the Belgian underground scene, pairing techno pioneers with rising names of the international circuit. The festival runs twice a year: a spring edition around late April or May, and a season-closing edition in early September. Dancers gather between cherry trees and palm trees for a full day and night of techno, with deep, progressive and melodic sounds mixed in, far from the scale and commercial feel of the big festivals.
Techno Festival Highlights:
- Techno Legends in a Garden Setting: Past editions have brought names such as Jeff Mills, Sven Väth, Laurent Garnier, Kevin Saunderson, Josh Wink, Ellen Allien, DVS1 and DJ Rush to an intimate outdoor dance floor.
- Two Contrasting Stages: One stage is devoted to raw, driving techno, and the other to melodic, deep and progressive journeys, so you can switch between moods through the day.
- Curated by Marco Bailey: The founder plays at every edition and builds each line-up around a mix of Detroit and European pioneers and up-and-coming underground artists.
- Boutique, Community Feel: Blossoms, palm trees, food trucks and a small, friendly crowd make it feel more like a big garden party than a mass-market festival.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Tickets & Entry Rules: Tickets are sold online in advance through the festival’s official ticketing partner, including day and weekend passes for the two-day editions and a premium tier. Entry is strictly 18+, even with a parent, and re-entry is not allowed.
- On Site: Food and drink are paid for with festival tokens bought on the grounds. Only small bags up to A4 size are allowed, and outside food and drinks, glass and professional cameras are banned.
- Getting There: Hoeleden is in the countryside, about 25 minutes’ drive from Leuven and under an hour from Brussels. The nearest towns with train stations are Tienen and Diest, and a taxi or car covers the last stretch. There is parking at the site, but sleeping in your car there isn’t allowed.
- What to Wear: Belgian weather can change quickly in spring and early autumn, so dress in layers, bring a rain jacket, and wear comfortable shoes for dancing on grass until late at night.
- Accommodation: Lodging options in the village are on the smaller side, and many visitors stay in nearby towns such as Tienen, Diest or Leuven, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore Belgium: Leuven’s historic university center and famous beer halls are close by, and Brussels, Ghent and Bruges are easy to reach by train — browse top Belgium tours and activities here.
