The dancing egg (L'Ou Com Balla) events started in 1637. They preserve the local traditional catholic customs of the Corpus Christi fiestas.
In the holiday days, egg shells are put on the water streams of the fountains of the city.

The fountains are decorated with flowers and the egg shells are flying over the water for the great joy of the visitors.
The main celebrations take place in Barcelona's cathedral, in Ateneu Barcelonès, in Casa de l'Ardiaca, in the Gothic quarter and other places over the city.

In the early evening of the first day of Corpus Christi, a traditional parade with giants and big-headed carnival figures, music and dance is held. The parade starts at the cathedral square and moves through the city's main streets.

Spain background and overview:
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
