Feast of Ascension

The Feast of the Ascension, also known as the Festa della Sensa, is a traditional celebration that takes place every year in Venice, Italy.

The festival is held on the Sunday following the Ascension, which is a Christian holiday that commemorates the ascension of Jesus Christ into heaven.
During the Feast of the Ascension, a flotilla of boats led by the Mayor of Venice and other officials sail out to the Lido, a nearby island, to perform a symbolic marriage ceremony between the city and the sea.

The ceremony dates back to the 12th century and is meant to symbolize the bond between Venice and the sea, which has always been a vital part of the city’s identity and economy.

After the ceremony, there are various events and activities taking place on the Lido, including boat races, music performances, and food stalls serving traditional Venetian dishes.

Like every year, hotel rooms are in high demand with surging prices during festival days. Therefore, it is highly recommended to book lodging accommodations ahead of time to enjoy preferable, better rates.

The festival is a time for the people of Venice to come together and celebrate their heritage, as well as to welcome the arrival of spring and the beginning of the sailing season. The Feast of the Ascension in Venice is a unique and colorful celebration that offers visitors a chance to experience the city’s rich history and culture firsthand.

Italy background and overview
Italy became a nation-state in 1861 when the regional states of the peninsula, along with Sardinia and Sicily, were united under King Victor EMMANUEL II. An era of parliamentary government came to a close in the early 1920s when Benito MUSSOLINI established a Fascist dictatorship. His disastrous alliance with Nazi Germany led to Italy's defeat in World War II. A democratic republic replaced the monarchy in 1946 and economic revival followed. Italy was a charter member of NATO and the European Economic Community (EEC). It has been at the forefront of European economic and political unification, joining the Economic and Monetary Union in 1999. Persistent problems include illegal immigration, organized crime, corruption, high unemployment, sluggish economic growth, and the low incomes and technical standards of southern Italy compared with the prosperous north.
