Every year, in the first half of July, a solemn festival brings Palermo’s residents five days of joy and enthusiasm.
The main purpose of the festival is to thank and worship the Palermo’s patron, Santa Rosalia. According to local faith, in 1694 she saved the city’s residents from a dreadful plague.
The festival is known as the last of the Europian “Baroque” festivals.
Various festive events, dance, shows and music that is heard all around are held. In addition, a parade leaded by a giant iron made triumphal chariot takes place. A large group of instrumentalists play on the carriage. The chariot with it players symbol the royal status of the city as well as the honor and wealth of the historic Palermo.
Even today, Palermo’s residents look upon Santa Rosalia as a great hope for their everyday life.
