Goa Carnival is based on the Christian tradition that was brought to Goa in 1510 by the Portuguese. This is the local version of the carnival which is celebrated worldwide before Mardi Gras.
The Goa Carnival is celebrated, every year, for four days (Saturday to Tuesday). The celebration starts on the Saturday before Ash Wednesday. In Christianity it is the first day of fasting out of 40 fasting/ avoidance meat days before Easter.
The carnival events combine fiestas of diverse cultures, religions and beliefs. Various streets shows take place side by side with religious ceremonies. Due to the numerous visitors during the festival days and the high demand for accommodations it is recommended to check hotel rates and book rooms well in advance.
The climax of the carnival is a colorful parade which is not less amazing than the holiday parades in South America. Giant presentations, floats, dance and varies music are part of the parade.
