Once a year, on “Good Friday”, Malta holds impressive sad processions like many other Christian countries.

The most impressive one is the procession which takes place in Valletta, the capital of Malta.

In this day, all restaurants, coffee houses and entertainment places are closed.

The “Good Friday” parades in Malta’s towns and villages are serious and gloomy, they express Jesus walk to his crucifixion. Glorious statues of Jesus are carried in the processions.

Among the participators of the procession, it is possible to see women and children dressed as Biblical figures, adults dressed as Roman soldiers and men wearing white gowns as the people who took part in the crucifixion.

After them, ascetic men march barefooted with their head in covered with black hood and their feet are locked with heavy iron chains, carry big wooden crosses.

Malta background and overview
Great Britain formally acquired possession of Malta in 1814. The island staunchly supported the UK through both World Wars and remained in the Commonwealth when it became independent in 1964. A decade later Malta became a republic. Since about the mid-1980s, the island has transformed itself into a freight transshipment point, a financial center, and a tourist destination. Malta became an EU member in May 2004.
