Gynaikokratia Festival – (Gynaikokratia literally means “women rule” or “a government of women”) is celebrated, every year, on January 8th. This is a feminist event that breaks the tradition for one day and the roles between men and women are switched.
On this day the women filled the coffee houses, the taverns and the villages’ squares with singing and dancing instead of the usual routines that only men sit in the coffee houses while the women work at home.
The events are held in the villages and townships of Thrace region in north Greece, especially in the northern villages Charopo, Petra and Monoklisia.
