Harbin is the capital of Heilongjiang Province, that is located in northeastern China. The city hosts every year for over thirty-five years an amazing snow and ice festival that stunned the visitors by the beauty of its sculptures and colorful displays. The festival takes place from early January until warm weather erodes the constructions (exact dates vary).

The huge, 50-meter-high ice displays are made by Chinese artists and guests from various countries. It attracts, every year, thousands of people from all around the world who come to see and experience the unique art that exists only in Harbin’s winter.

At the festival that began in 1985, more than 2,000 spectacular sculptures are displayed. The sculptures are made of unimaginable 120,000 cubic meters of ice that was quarried of Songhua River. The sculptures are present on the frozen ground of over 600,000 square meters.

To complete the visual experience, a display of artistic ice lanterns illuminated by hundreds of colorful lights takes place at the nearby Zhaolin Park.

The beauty, the overwhelming atmosphere of the white ice and snow, the lights and the size of the huge exhibits promise the visitor at Harbin festival an unforgettable experience.

China background and overview
For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of the world in the arts and sciences, but in the 19th and early 20th centuries, the country was beset by civil unrest, major famines, military defeats, and foreign occupation. After World War II, the Communists under MAO Zedong established an autocratic socialist system that, while ensuring China's sovereignty, imposed strict controls over everyday life and cost the lives of tens of millions of people. After 1978, his successor DENG Xiaoping and other leaders focused on market-oriented economic development and by 2000 output had quadrupled. For much of the population, living standards have improved dramatically and the room for personal choice has expanded, yet political controls remain tight.
