The “Wine Battle” Festival takes place in Haro, the wine industry town in La Rioja region of northern Spain. The festival is held every year from 27 to 30 June, attracting thousands of celebrants from Spain and around the world who celebrate the feast of the Patron of San Pedro on June 29.

Like every year, hotel rooms are in high demand with surging prices during festival days. Therefore, it is highly recommended to book lodging accommodations ahead of time to enjoy preferable, better rates.

Among the events of the festival are parties, live music and dance performances. The peak of the festival that all the celebrants are waiting for is the “wine fights” (La Batalla del Vino) when the celebrants pour and sprinkle wine from bottles, various containers, water pistols etc…

The events of the “battles” are opened by the mayor riding on a horse, leading a procession of marchers of all ages, young and old carrying bottles, vases and mini dishes containing red wine.

At the end of the procession, hundreds of celebrants also gather with wine containers, and then the wine-splitting war begins as the warriors are wet from red wine from head to toe. Anyone who wants to enjoy good music, dancing and true authentic joy and experience a special “intoxicating” experience must attend the events at the Haru Wine Festival.

Spain background and overview
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
