It’s since 1995, that the Yiddish Music and Theater Week (Judische Musik und Theaterwoche Dresden) takes place in the German city of Dresden.

The festival is dedicated to the language and culture of the the Jews of eastern Europe and is therefore unique in Germany.  However, more and more the Jewish culture of today becomes an important part of the festivals, too.

It all started in 1995 when enthusiasts from Rocktheater Dresden – a non professional theatre group with a special interest in music theater (not musical!)- started to rehears Itzik Mangers ”Di Megille” in yiddish.

The play was a great success and since they had got to know many people with an interest in Yiddish, Rocktheater founder Detlef Hutschenreuter initiated the first Yiddish Week in 1997 to bring all those people together.

Highlights of the first year were the performances of Golda Tencer, famous actress of the Warsaw Jewish Theatre. Planned originally only for one year since 1998 the Yiddish week took place every year. In the festival there are all together more than 60 performances, films, concerts, lectures and guided tours etc.
