The Locarno International Film Festival takes place every year, usually in August. The festival began in 1946 and over the years, it turned to be the name and home of artistic films, full length films, documentaries and more.

Among the films, there are competitive and non-competitive sections. The first prize awarded to the winners of the festival’s is the famous “Golden Tiger” – the symbol of the old festival.

Unique to the Locarno Film Festival is the huge screening site in Piazza Grande, hosting 8,000 spectators, locals and many guests from abroad.

Like every year, hotel rooms are in high demand with surging prices during festival days. Therefore, it is highly recommended to book lodging accommodations ahead of time to enjoy preferable, better rates.

As in festivals of similar importance in the world, here too, the events attract a large audience, film professionals and well-known actors.

The festival’s program, venue, film submission information, film lineup information, tickets, shows time / schedule of events, etc. is present in the festival’s link website. See details below, under “Event Related Information” section.

Switzerland background and overview
The Swiss Confederation was founded in 1291 as a defensive alliance among three cantons. In succeeding years, other localities joined the original three. The Swiss Confederation secured its independence from the Holy Roman Empire in 1499. Switzerland's sovereignty and neutrality have long been honored by the major European powers, and the country was not involved in either of the two World Wars. The political and economic integration of Europe over the past half century, as well as Switzerland's role in many UN and international organizations, has strengthened Switzerland's ties with its neighbors. However, the country did not officially become a UN member until 2002. Switzerland remains active in many UN and international organizations, but retains a strong commitment to neutrality.
