Loi Krathong festival is unique in its beauty. The festival is held nationwide in Thailand where its events reach its climax on full moon of the 12th month of the Thai lunar calendar (usually in November). Little boats carrying light candles are sailed on rivers and various cisterns.

The boats are made of banana tree and are decorated with banana leafs woven in marvelous shapes. Loi Krathong is an agricultural holiday. The Water Goddess, Phra Mae Khongkha, is praised for giving water to the farmers for their crop. According to the religious belief, sailing light candles on the water frees the sending person from anger and dirt and allow him to re-begin his life in a new neat way.

Some of the believers cut their hair and nails and put it in the boats near the candles as a symbol to their separation from evil. Learn more about Thailand travel experiences.  Get plenty of helpful tips for planning a successful trip with travel guide books, e-books and digital chapters.

Thailand background and overview
A unified Thai kingdom was established in the mid-14th century. Known as Siam until 1939, Thailand is the only Southeast Asian country never to have been taken over by a European power. A bloodless revolution in 1932 led to a constitutional monarchy. In alliance with Japan during World War II, Thailand became a US ally following the conflict. Thailand is currently facing armed violence in its three Muslim-majority southernmost provinces.
