Classical Music Festival Highlights:
- Lucerne Festival Orchestra: Claudio Abbado founded the orchestra in 2003, and Riccardo Chailly has led it since 2016. It brings together renowned soloists, chamber musicians and principal players from top ensembles, and its Lucerne concerts are among the most sought-after tickets in classical music.
- Summer Festival in the KKL Luzern: Over about five weeks, leading symphony orchestras from Berlin, Vienna, Amsterdam and beyond give guest performances alongside star soloists and chamber recitals, all built around the year’s theme.
- Lucerne Festival Forward: The November weekend is the home stage of the Lucerne Festival Contemporary Orchestra, founded in 2021. It offers new music, premieres and experimental concert formats for curious listeners.
- Lucerne Festival Pulse: This piano-centred festival is hosted by Icelandic star pianist Víkingur Ólafsson. It combines solo recitals, concerto performances, chamber music and collaborations with other art forms.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Tickets & Free Events: Tickets for the big orchestra nights, especially the Lucerne Festival Orchestra, sell out quickly once the program is released, so buy early. In summer there are also free events: the short “40min” introductory concerts at the KKL (a free ticket is required), an open-air concert on Europaplatz, and a live screening of the opening concert in Inseli Park.
- The Venue: The KKL Luzern sits right on the lakefront next to the railway station. Arrive early to enjoy the views from its terraces and the famous overhanging roof before the concert.
- Getting There: Lucerne is about an hour by train from Zurich Airport and Zurich HB, and the KKL is just steps from Luzern station. You don’t need a car; Swiss public transport covers everything.
- What to Wear: Smart attire is the norm for evening concerts in the KKL Concert Hall, though a tie is not required. Bring a light jacket for lakeside walks after summer concerts and warm layers for the March and November weekends.
- Accommodation: Lucerne is one of Switzerland’s busiest tourist cities, and hotel prices climb steeply in the late-summer festival season, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore Lucerne: Between concerts, stroll across the Chapel Bridge, take a cruise on Lake Lucerne, or ride the cogwheel railway up Mount Pilatus — browse top Lucerne tours and activities here.
