Melbourne International Jazz Festival
Since its debut as the Marvellous Melbourne Jazz Festival in 1997 and its rebrand the following year, the Melbourne International Jazz Festival (MIJF) has grown into Australia’s premier jazz event and one of the country’s biggest music festivals of any genre. Held annually each October, the festival spreads more than 150 performances by upwards of 550 artists across roughly 30 venues throughout Melbourne — from grand concert halls to intimate jazz clubs.
The festival’s headline weekends are anchored by Jazz at the Bowl at the iconic Sidney Myer Music Bowl, which regularly opens with a major album-anniversary performance from an Australian act alongside international guests, and closes with an all-star supergroup lineup.
Festival Highlights:
- Jazz at the Bowl: Open-air headline concerts at the Sidney Myer Music Bowl bookending the festival, pairing major Australian acts with visiting international artists.
- International Headliners: Marquee club and theatre shows throughout the program bring in leading names from the US and international jazz scene for exclusive Australian performances.
- Young Monk: International Edition: A showcase for emerging talent co-curated with New York’s Jazz at Lincoln Center, spotlighting the next generation of jazz musicians.
- Club & Late-Night Series: Venues including The Jazzlab, Chapel Off Chapel, 170 Russell and Howler host a nightly circuit of local and touring acts, including regular Australian premieres of touring international ensembles.
Tips for Visitors & Trip Planning:
- Mixed Free & Ticketed Program: A large share of MIJF’s program is free or low-cost, but headline shows at the Bowl and major club gigs sell out — book tickets through the official festival site as soon as the program drops.
- Spread-Out Venues: With around 30 venues in play, from the Melbourne Recital Centre and Hamer Hall to small inner-city clubs, plan your route in advance — many are walkable within the CBD and Southbank, but check the program for venues further out like Bunjil Place.
- Getting There: Melbourne’s trams and trains connect most CBD and Southbank venues; Flinders Street and Southern Cross stations are the main hubs, with the City Circle tram useful for hopping between venues.
- What to Wear: October in Melbourne is spring, with mild days but famously changeable weather — layers and a light rain jacket are a safe bet, especially for the outdoor Bowl shows.
- Accommodation: Hotels around the CBD, Southbank and Fitzroy fill up fast during festival season, so booking well in advance is strongly recommended.
- Explore Melbourne: Make the most of the trip with a stop at the city’s laneways, galleries and gardens — browse top Melbourne tours and activities here.
