The Moors and Christians Festival (Fiestas de Moros y Cristianos en Alcoi) perpetuates the victory of the Christianity upon the Moslems in Spain on the 13th century. The struggles between the different cultures turned into a war when the Moors arrive at the Iberian Peninsula.

The Moors were members of the nomad tribes from North Africa. Their origin is Arabic and Barbarian tribes mainly from Mauritania who were converted to Islam on the 8th century. The tribes wandered at the north areas of Africa and on the 13th century arrived as jealous Moslems to the Iberian Peninsula.

The festivals that perpetuate the historic events are held on various districts of Spain, where every area holds its events in various ways.
One of the cities which are known by its beautiful events is Alcoy. Between 22nd until 24th of April the city celebrates in three days fiesta.

The visitors can enjoy streets shows which simulate face to face battles, impressive men parade where the participants wear colored uniforms like in the middle ages, march according to giant drums tempo. In addition, dance, singing and music groups, in colorful cloth, middle ages fashion, performed in the streets.

This is an experience that takes the spectators to an historic time journey hundred years ago.

Spain background and overview
Spain's powerful world empire of the 16th and 17th centuries ultimately yielded command of the seas to England. Subsequent failure to embrace the mercantile and industrial revolutions caused the country to fall behind Britain, France, and Germany in economic and political power. Spain remained neutral in World Wars I and II, but suffered through a devastating civil war (1936-39). A peaceful transition to democracy following the death of dictator Francisco FRANCO in 1975, and rapid economic modernization (Spain joined the EU in 1986), have given Spain one of the most dynamic economies in Europe and made it a global champion of freedom. Continuing challenges include Basque Fatherland and Liberty (ETA) terrorism and relatively high unemployment.
